Web Developer (Drupal) – Asheville, NC


Position Description

Will develop, implement, and maintain a fully virtualized architecture for the National Integrated Drought Information System. Will perform continuous integration and automated deployment testing processes for the portal’s various compute, discovery, and distribution systems. Will work closely with stakeholders to create and execute project plans for web and interactive map services to support various federal, state, and local agencies monitor drought.


Required Skills

2-5 years of hands-on development experience with Drupal 7 and 8, PHP 5 and 7, and with using and integrating the US Web Design standards. Must have an understanding of Model-View-Controller (MVC) design and implementation choices in PHP; HTTP and HTTPS protocols, including RESTful interface design; the D3 projection javascript library; GIS projections, including applicable uses of equal area and web mapping projections; and GeoJSON format, including asynchronously reading GeoJSON from within Leaflet, inside of Drupal. Must have demonstrated ability to integrate custom Leaflet applications into Drupal; use of Git, in a git-flow workflow methodology; and use of git to merge bugfixes into operational Drought.gov site. Ability to write custom Drupal modules in Drupal 7 and 8 is required. Also requires experience in the following:


WCAG 2.0 accessibility compliance
Leaflet mapping
ArcGIS Online ‘Location Suggest API’
ArcGIS REST API, including demonstrated understanding of using the layers and data services available from NOAA, including NCEI and the NWS IDP
WMS, including the WMS service organization at the National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC)
XML schema and XML data services available from the NDMC
Google Charts API, including integration into Drupal
Accessing Oracle from PHP
SVG syntax and ability to auto-generate SVG from PHP to meet responsive graphing requirements on Drought.gov
Drupal modules: Workbench, Panels, Paragraphs, Imagick, Image caching
Site design using a headless, decoupled Drupal 8 for content management combined with a Symfony MVC framework for the presentation layer.

Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to enter the applicable government facility.



BS in computer science, physical science, related discipline, or equivalent.
